Get your pool ready for summer

Tips from pool menders for this summer

After winter a neglected greenish pool with leaves and debris needs to be cleaned up and restored to its beautiful blue condition and chemical balance.

  • Don't empty your pool.

Only empty your pool if you are doing repairs, resurfacing your pool or if the water can not be corrected without chemicals or filtration.
Emptying your pool can cause problems, if you are in a very wet climate the lack of weight (water weight) may cause the pool to pop out or if you are in an area where the water table is high it can cause the pool shell to pop out.
  • Start the filtration system

Make sure the water level are sufficient for the filter to run, clean out the basket and backwash the system and get the filter going.
  • Get your water tested.

Take a sample of water in a clean container to your nearest hardware (if they have a testing system) or pool shop for them to give you an accurate assessment of what you pool needs in terms of chemicals to get your pool back to its sparkling colour.
They would will give you a step by step instructions on what to add, when and how much.
The main trick here is to get the PH balance right first then you can use flocculants to settle debris and vacuum this to waste once the water is clear and settled.
  • Maintenance

Once the water is clear and all the debris has been removed, maintenance of the pool should include a floater that has a stabiliser in it.
Stabilisers prevent the sun from burning off chlorine in your water. Follow the instructions  provided for on your chosen brand of chlorine
Backwash your pool when the pressure on the pressure gauge is higher than the normal running pressure. Always backwash for 3 to 5 minuets depending on the size of the sand filter. It is better to backwash for longer than when the pressure is high than to backwash weekly irrespective of the pressure.
